Course Snapshot

All about the IDC

The IDC breaks down into these broad areas:

  • Learning about the PADI diver training system and teaching principles.
  • Interactive workshops discussing training scenarios, options and flexibility.
  • Developing your personal teaching ability with Classroom, Confined Water and Open Water presentations.

The clue is in the title - Development - we’ll take you through every aspect of what you need to be a great instructor, expanding your knowledge, abilities, and honing your skills. By the end of the course the exam will be easy, and you can focus on the best part - being a PADI dive instructor!

During the course you will have plenty of Confined Water and Open Water practice to master your skill presentations. In the evenings you’ll have time to cover any eLearning you need for the next day, or for extra dive theory practice.

At the culmination of your IDC, is the Instructor Examination. This two day programme with a PADI examiner will verify the same instructional skills you practiced during the IDC.

We make sure you're taught above and beyond the basic requirements, ensuring you'll have full confidence in your abilities, and for the IE.

We're proud of our 100% record, so much so that we offer another IDC free, should you need it.

Instructor Course FAQ's

When can I start?
The IDC is run on a monthly schedule based on the pre-planned exam dates. For your course we recommend arriving at least a few days before to settle in, go diving, and get some theory preparation.
How is best to prepare?

The two best ways to prepare, are to get access to your CrewPack early so you can start on the elearning, and to revise and practice your dive theory.

The elearning is a critical part of your instructor development and will take some time to work through, so a good headstart on this will give you valuable extra time during the course.

Whilst we schedule plenty of theory remedials during the programme, they're all outside of the normal hours, so its very advantageous to be comfortable in this area before we start.

What's a typical day like?

We start most days at 8am and finish around 4pm with a lunch break of an hour. The first week is generally busier, which allows us more flexibility in the second week leading up to the exam.

Day to day is usually a combination of classroom workshops, water work (either Confined or Open Water) and your presentations. We keep it varied and try to avoid completely dry days (though there will be a couple), plus we finish early enough for any independent study you need to complete in the evening.

What's the Visa situation?

When you land in Honduras most nationalities are eligible for a free 3 month tourist visa which can be extended to 4 months when your here on Roatan.

If you arrive overland your tourist visa is usually for 1 month only.

What's the PADI CrewPack?
Your PADI CrewPack contains the learning materials you need for the course. The digital part contains your elearning, plus other important resources/tools for being an instructor. You will also receive physical slates and a PADI backpack. The CrewPack is required for all candidates and is purchased through Reef Gliders. You'll receive your digital materials instantly after booking, and pick up the physical parts when you arrive at Reef Gliders.
What will I be able to teach afterwards?

As an Open Water Scuba Instructor, you can teach the core courses of Open Water, Advanced, Rescue and Divemaster, plus experiences like Discover Scuba Diving. The specialty ratings AWARE, Coral Reef Conservation and PPB are also included with OWSI certification.

If you want to teach higher level specialties such as Enriched Air Nitrox, Deep Diver and Wreck Specialty, you will need extra training.

What equipment do I need?

We include all the main pieces of gear, particularly the tricky ones to travel with such as BCD, Fins, Regulator etc.

We require you to have your own: Mask/Snorkel, SMB/Reel and Dive Computer.

We highly recommend all our professional candidates to have their own gear if possible.
